Recently, the Office for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants of National Forestry and Grassland Administration organized experts to carry out a substantive review of three new varieties, i.e. “Exquisite Pink”, “Pink Fair Lady” and “Green Carpet”, which were cultivated by the  Lagerstroemia  i ndica  Research Group of the National Engineering Research Center for Floriculture and the School of Landscape Architecture in BFU.

The expert team confirmed the specificity, consistency and stability of three new varieties according to the DUS testing guide of  Lagerstroemia indica  newvarieties by observing the characteristics of mother plant and offspring of three new varieties on the spot and listening carefully to the report on the work about breeding made by the research group.

Among the three new varieties of  Lagerstroemia indica , “Exquisite Pink” and “Pink Fair Lady” were obtained by filial generation of  Lagerstroemia fauriei  and “Pocomoke” backcrossing with “Pocomoke”. With many branches and compact plant type and bright colors, “Exquisite Pink” is suitable for serving as potted plants and garden greening; “Pink Fair Lady” is suitable for garden greening for its large plant type and many flowers as well as dark red flower buds; Being the first type of  Lagerstroemia indica  species that does not bloom, “Green Carpet” is a hybrid of  Lagerstroemiafauriei  and “Pocomoke”, with low and compact plant type and spreading branches, which means that it can cover the ground extremely well and is suitable for the cultivation of cover plant.

The three new varieties have obvious specificity and good ornamental value, which enrich the existing varieties of  Lagerstroemia indica  and have a good market prospect.
