Xi Jinping thought on ecological civilization is an important component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

It offers answers to such theoretical and practical questions as why to build an ecological civilization, what the goal is, and how to achieve it, and thus enriches Marxist thought on the relationship between man and nature. It reflects a deeper understanding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) of the laws underlying the development of socialism, and gives full expression to the CPC’s founding mission, governance philosophy and sense of responsibility. It also provides valuable guidance on enhancing China’s eco-environmental protection and bringing its ecological civilization to a new height, and serves as a fundamental principle for building a beautiful Chinaand promoting sustainable development of the Chinese nation.

2018年5月，全国生态环境保护大会总结并阐释了习近平生态文明思想。习近平在大会上提出了新时代推进生态文明建设的主要原则，并首次提出加快构建生态文明体系，即以生态价值观念为准则的生态文化体系，以产业生态化和生态产业化为主体的生态经济体系，以改善生态环境质量为核心的目标责任体系，以治理体系和治理能力现代化为保障的生态文明制度体系，以生态系统良性循环和环境风险有效防控为重点的生态安全体系。“五个体系”系统界定了生态文明体系的基本框架，指出了生态文明建设的思想保证、物质基础、制度保障以及责任和底线。“五个体系”不仅是建设美丽中国的行动指南，也为构建人类命运共同体贡献了生态文明理念和实践的“中国方案”。

An outcome of the National Conference on Eco-environmental Protection held in May 2018 was its summarization of Xi Jinping thought on ecological civilization. Addressing the conference, Xi Jinping put forward the principles to apply in building an ecological civilization.

For the first time, he raised the idea of developing a system for creating an ecological civilization. This means to foster a culture promoting eco-values, an economy highlighting eco-friendly industries and industrialization of environmental protection activities, a responsibility system for achieving the goal of improving the eco-environment, a system of institutions for building an ecological civilization supported by modernized governance, and a security system prioritizing well-functioning ecosystems and effective control of environmental risks.

These set a framework for building an eco-civilization based on relevant philosophy, material foundation, institutional support, andclearly defined responsibility and bottom line. They will guide the efforts in building a beautiful China, and offer a Chinese approach to ecological civilization in building a global community of shared future.
