New progress made by the College of Materials Science and Technology on high value utilization of hemicellulose

2023-04-17

Recently, research team led by Professor Pengfeng from the College of Materials Science and Technology scored new achievements, and the research results under the title of “Paper-Mill Waste Reinforced Nanofluidic Membrane as High-Performance Osmotic Energy Generators”was published in"Advanced Functional Materials"(IF=19.924).

Xylan, a common by-product in the process of dissolved pulp production in Chinese pulp and paper industry, is featured by its low branching degree, regular molecular chain structure, high crystallinity after extracted using a concentrated alkali solution approach and is almost insoluble in various common solvents. The high-performance utilization of xylan has been seriously affecting the industry development, and is one of the urgent problems to be solved in the high-performance utilization of forest biomass resources. As a result, the research team led by Professor Pengfeng successfully designed and explored a xylan reinforced nanofluidic membrane that features ultrafast ion transport, excellent water stability, low-cost, and exceptional mechanical strength for the first time.

Song Guanghui, a graduate student from the College of Materials Science and Technology is the first author, teacher Chen Gegu and Proffesor Peng Feng are corresponding authors of the paper. Beijing Key Laboratory of Lignocellulosic Chemistry of Beijng Forestry University is the first complete unit.
