This important volume highlights regional disparities arising amidst the diverse social dynamics of Chinese rural village life. Drawing on the fact-based “middle-range theory”, the author compares and contrasts interpersonal social relationships in rural Northern, Central and Southern China. In the three geographic regions are multitudes of diverse rural community structures that are as unique as the places where they are practiced. In the book, segmented village kinship groups are recognized with a high degree of atomization in North China while patrilineage-based societal structures are the constant underpinning in South China.
