On the afternoon of October 17th, “The Old Summer Palace Research Institute of Beijing Forestry University (BFU)” was officially unveiled at the founding ceremony of the Old Summer Palace Research University Alliance and the 1st University Research Achievements Exhibition. An Lizhe, President of BFU, and Zhang Ruobing, Standing Committee of Haidian District Committee, Organization Minister and Deputy District Director, jointly unveiled for the Institute in the multi-functional hall of the Old Summer Palace Research Institute Management Office.
In his speech, An Lizhe pointed out that BFU has an indissoluble bond with the Old Summer Palace, for which a large number of experts and scholars in BFU, represented by famous landscape architect Bai Rixin and forest ecologist Luo Juchun, have carried out continuous and in-depth research and protection of the Old Summer Palace for more than half a century. What’s more, a series of fruitful results have been achieved in recent years, and BFU research team has explored the mode of interdisciplinary research on landscape heritage, including study on the authenticity of historical landscapes, the status quo of heritage and vegetation, ecological restoration and environmental monitoring, covering heritage protection, landscape architecture, landscape plants, forestry and plant taxonomy, ecology, environmental engineering and other disciplines. At the same time, the Old Summer Palace is an important teaching and practice base of landscape architecture of BFU, from which countless BFU students learned the essence of Chinese classical gardens and grew into excellent landscape architects, making outstanding contributions to the promotion of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation.
An Lizhe stressed that it is of great significance to jointly build the Old Summer Palace Research Institute and deepen research on the Old Summer Palace. BFU will give full play to its advantages, invest more academic force and deepen scientific research cooperation with the Old Summer Palace Management Office and alliance of universities, thus strengthening educational cooperation, promoting resource sharing and focusing on platform co-construction. BFU will continuously explore the rich contents of the Old Summer Palace and excavate the precious value of the Old Summer Palace, as well as promote the protection and utilization of it so as to inject more vitality into the inheritance and development of classical gardens, to enhance the innovation and influence of China’s excellent cultural heritage, and make new contributions to Beijing’s “Four Centers” Construction and the strategy of developing a strong and influential culture.
It is reported that in recent years, the Old Summer Palace Management Office has established the Old Summer Palace Research Institutes with not only BFU, but also many other domestic universities, including Beijing Jiaotong University, Tianjin University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, China Agricultural University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Peking University and Beijing Institute of Technology. A large number of outstanding experts and scholars have cooperated in more than 50 research projects, such as heritage protection, planning and design, environmental monitoring, visual communication, and cultural and creative arts. We should promote the combination of basic, applied and academic research with industrial development, subject research and personnel training in the Old Summer Palace, so that the garden heritage and historical culture can be more effectively protected and utilized.
On the same day, the 1st University Research Achievements Exhibition was held in the multi-functional hall of the Old Summer Palace, including the explorations of historical landscape in the Old Summer Palace of BFU began by Mr. Bai Rixin, the comprehensive research on some scenic spots in the Old Summer Palace (the European-style palaces, Nine Continents in Peace, etc.) carried out by relevant BFU research teams in recent years, and a large number of fruitful papers and books as well as research achievements.
Relevant leaders of the Party and Administrative Affairs Office, Development and Planning Office, Landscape Architecture School and School of Ecology and Nature Conservation participated in the activities.
It is understood that on the October 18th, “the International Symposium on the Research, Protection and Utilization of the Old Summer Palace”, co-organized by the Old Summer Palace Research Institute of BFU, was also successfully held in the Old Summer Palace Management Office. Experts and scholars from the Old Summer Palace Research Institutes of different universities and the Old Summer Palace researchers at home and abroad have adopted the combination of online and offline pattern to exchange and discuss the theme of “the Old Summer Palace Research, Protection and Exhibition in the Context of Cultural Renaissance”. Luo Juchun, a professor of ecology at BFU, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Investigation on the Present Situation of Plants and Damaging Sites of Sixteen Scenic Spots in the Old Summer Palace”. Cao Xin, an associate professor of Landscape Architecture School of BFU, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Protection and Development of World Landscape Heritage and Value and Protection of Old Summer Palace”, and Liang Wenyan, a professor of Environmental Protection School of BFU, made a forum report entitled “Research on Eco-environmental Quality of Sixteen Scenic Spots in Old Summer Palace”. The forum reports show the achievements of BFU in the protection of Old Summer Palace heritage, the authenticity of historical landscape, vegetation investigation and ecological environment restoration.
